What is a Keyword in SEO?

Keywords are the search terms, important/main words that you want your website/page/article to rank for in any search engine. Keywords clearly describe the type of content, about the content that is available on your website.

In Search Engine Optimization, keywords play a vital role, as it’s the backbone of any search query done by the user over the search engines.

There are various types of Keywords some of them are –

  1. Main Keywords
  2. Related Keywords
  3. Long tail keywords
  4. Negative keywords

What is a main keyword?

A main keyword is the primary keyword or primary term you want your page to be ranked for and shown in the search results.

For Example for this particular article, the main keyword is “What is a Keyword” , now you know that keywords are not just formed with one word, keywords can be of 3 or 4 words combined.

Another example of a main keyword can is “Search Engine Optimization” the keyword is of three words. The main keyword can be used in both page-level keywords and content-level keywords.

What is Page Level Keyword?

A keyword that is used to describe the contents of the page, and you want the page to be ranked for that particular keyword, this website page can be static and contain links to other articles etc. is called a

Page Level Keywords.

What is Content Level Keyword?

A Content level keyword is used to describe the content of a specific article. For Example “Search Engine Optimization” can be both Page Level Keyword and Content Level Keyword, but “How to do Keyword Research” can only be a content level keyword as it is specific to the topic Keyword Research.

What are Related Keywords?

Related keywords are similar keywords that can also be used to describe the main content of the article or a web page.

Related Keywords are generally of more than 4-5 words. Related keywords are helpful when there are multiple sub-topics about the same topics covering a wide range of content.

What are Long Tail Keywords?

Long Tail Keywords are keywords that consist of more than 4 words, these are generally related keywords as discussed above. This helps describe the content of the article or the webpage to search engines more effectively.

Long Tail Keywords are generally the most used along with the main keyword.

What are Negative Keywords?

Negative Keywords are those keywords that you want to remove while a search result has been shown that is close to your related keyword.

One such example of a negative keyword is “How to get backlinks for free” here the keyword “How to get backlinks” is a related keyword but the word “Free” might have a negative impact on your article as you might have a focus keyword / main keyword “How to get backlinks” and your article is telling about the Premium backlink service etc.

So, you add the whole keyword “How to get backlinks for free” to the negative keyword section.
